Surrounded by the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Sri Lanka is laden with lush tropical forests, white-sand beaches and beautiful landscapes. Dubbed the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean', Sri Lanka boasts a long and colourful history stretching back over 3,000 years, achieving independence from British rule in 1948.

Situated between latitudes 5° and 10° N, and longitudes 79° and 82° E, Sri Lanka is separated from the Indian Subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait, and enjoys mean annual temperatures of between 28-31 C. Fron June to September, strong and consistent trade winds are drawn over and around the island into the Bay of Bengal, feeding the south-western monsoon.

Not only is the island surrounded by the lush tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, it is also home to hundreds of lakes and lagoons, offering endless flatwater kiteboarding conditions throughout the country.

The end of Sri Lanka's 30 year civil war in 2009 has brought hope and the promise of a better future to its people. Large areas of the island which have remained off limits for decades are now open for business and are enthusiastically embracing tourism and their new-found freedom.

The north-west and eastern provinces in particular offer near perfect conditions for kiteboarding. In the north west, clean winds from 15-25 knots hit the coastline every day. With consistent winds, balmy temperatures and virtually no rainfall over the summer months, the Kalpitiya peninsula and its vast number of lagoons is likely to become a kite hotspot in the years to come. The dry eastern province, virtually undiscovered by kiteboarders, brings even more promise with regular winds between 20-35 knots, a pristine coastline and a consistent groundswell from the south. The area is gaining a serious reputation among Surfers as a hotspot, and for the wave rider in you, the entire eastern coastline holds amazing potential.

For 7 days we are based 200km north of Colombo on the Kalpitiya peninsula at the Diyamba Resort. Our accommodation is in private bungalows among tropical gardens overlooking saltwater lagoons & the Indian Ocean. With raised viewing areas and a natural open plan, Diyamba is a great place from which to explore the peninsula. There's plenty of space for your kites and fresh water for cleaning down at the end of the day.

For the Arugam Bay trip extension, after a short drive and a spectacular sea-plane flight across the island, we arrive in the tropical oasis of 'Arugam Bay'. The area was virtually rubbed off the map in the 2004 tsunami, but it has experienced a strong recovery and we make this delightful spot our home for the next 4 days. You can set up directly infront of your beach lodge or join us on day-trips to secret spots in the area.
